How to Declutter Your Mind: A Spiritual Approach to Inner Peace
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to find ourselves burdened with a cluttered mind. Overthinking, constant worries, and endless "what ifs" can weigh us down, making it difficult to find peace; so if you are someone seeking mental clarity then these are 7 effective methods to achieve a decluttered mind and restore a sense of calm :
1. Acknowledge the clutter :
Generally, half the chatter of the mind comes from procrastination or neglecting small, routine tasks. Simple daily tasks like remembering to drink enough water or sending a quick email take up more space than required, leaving very little room for important tasks. This induces stress, making even a few tasks feel overwhelming as they're laced with emotions like frustration or anxiety.
So, step one is to acknowledge all the clutter in your mind.
Consciously recognise the clutter. Write what you are feeling and thinking. Organise your thoughts on a paper. Structure it. Imagine yourself as the landlord of your mind, and evict any unnecessary thoughts. Allow one task at a time to take up your headspace.
Next, keep a to-do list. Discipline your mind into following what is planned. Your sincerity to do it all and to do it all right, is what drives you crazy. So, carefully weigh the tasks and prioritise based on urgency, size, and requirement. Remember, stick to the plan, not the mood.
2. Identify the root cause of the clutter :
Once you’ve organised your thoughts; you may begin to see a repeated pattern. You now have to address the root cause of the clutter. Understanding the "why" behind the chaos will not only reduce stress but also empower you to prevent future clutter from building up.
Ask yourself: How did my mind become cluttered in the first place? Here are some common causes that may help guide your self-reflection -
- Daydreaming and unmet expectation - You would have painted an idealised picture of where you thought you’d be by now, and being unable to achieve this can cause a constant fight in your mind about what is and what can be. This inner tension is mentally taxing. Acknowledge these thoughts, but don’t dwell on them. Shift your focus to your present blessings. Your life could have been so much worse. But the fact that you are here, alive, is the greatest gift of all.
- Overthinking and fear of uncertainty - Overthinking arises when your mind keeps replaying situations, trying to control outcomes that are largely out of your hands. Talk to your mind, let your mind know that you have done the best you can and the result is based on a lot of variables, so there is no point dwelling on the result. Instead, focus on what you can do.
- Running away from responsibilities - Another reason for the clutter in your mind could be because you are meant to do something but you have not gotten around to it. Fortunately for us, our mind will constantly remind us that we have a pending responsibility. Once you start confronting what you’ve been avoiding, your mind will let you be at ease.
3. Sleep :
We can’t emphasise enough on how important quality sleep is for a decluttered mind. Our guru Shubha Didi says that 7 hrs of sleep is a must for the human body. There is a lot of research on the need for humans to get their REM sleep. So, please put your phones or any other entertainment down and get your REM sleep in. Our mind is a self-cleaning dustbin, give it the time to clean out and organise.
4. Right start to the day :
A good sleep and a right start to your day will do wonders for your mental health. The tone for your day is set by how you begin it, so it’s imperative to start the day with faith and positivity.
Start your day with a simple prayer to god for being given the opportunity to live another day. This small act will not just inculcate faith but also help you cultivate the attitude and mindset to be grateful.
Follow the prayer with some positive affirmations. Commit to yourself that you won’t play the victim card in your mind today. Instead, seek an ally in your mind to help identify when negative thoughts or self-doubt start to creep in.
Avoid starting your day with social media or anything that will influence you to feel that you are not enough or will inflate your ego. Both extremes are equally bad and will distort your mental balance. Try to start your day in a grateful yet neutral tone.
5. Positive distractions -
A lot of times despite mental clarity, our mind falls trap to negativity, and addressing it when it is overwhelmed does more harm than good. So, when your mind is spiralling, trying to reason can backfire. In such moments, distract your mind.
Be mindful that not all distractions are good. Let the distractions not be more content for your mind to chew, instead engage in activities that allow your mind to rest and simply “be.”
Exercising is one of the best positive distractions. Play a physical sport or run. Keep your body busy so that you can ignore the mind until it calms down.
Pick up a hobby like knitting or dancing. These hobbies help you take a step back from the mental clutter without feeding your brain more information to process. Give your mind a break so that you can return to your tasks with a clearer, calmer mindset.
6. Meditate -
Mediation is simply the practice of bringing your mind into the present. So, don’t get confused with the various types of meditation and which one is right for you. What matters the most is to reconnect with yourself.
Daily allow yourself time to bring your mind into the present. To get started, focus on something simple, like your breath or chanting “Aum.” These practices anchor your mind to the now, allowing the ghosts of the past and the worries of the future to slip away. As you sit in silence, allow your mind to enjoy the present.
Consistency is the key. Daily meditation is important as you are creating a habit for your mind, training it to return to calmness when overwhelmed. Over time, your mind will learn how to find its way back to peace on its own, even in moments of stress or chaos. This peace will give rise to clarity and help declutter your mind.
7. As the company, so the colour -
You will see this solution to be a repeated theme in almost all our blogs and for good reason. As it is one of the simplest and most effective way to strengthen our mind and find inner peace. In the right company, you don’t have to do anything but simply choose to spend your time among them. The people around you deeply influence your mindset and hence the environment will stimulate your growth.
Choose the company of those who live life with a positive outlook, regardless of their life situations. Spend time with people who are not bogged down by their problems but have a solution-oriented mindset.
One such nurturing community of people is our very own IISHT community. It’s a space of individuals who prioritise growth, positivity, and self-improvement. Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone—the right company will help your mind flourish, just by being part of the right crowd.
Inner peace doesn’t come from external circumstances, but from how well you manage your mind. By following these steps consciously and consistently, you will not just declutter your mind but also prevent future clutter from building up. Remember, Calmness is not a quick fix, you have to choose your inner peace every step of the way.
